Booking choice: The Caminito del Rey guided tour, 7 hours. Book this Tour details
Málaga is the best base on the Costa del Sol for day trips. Motorways and the high-speed line run out of it in every direction, and the tour coaches leave from the centre. Within about two hours you reach a cliff walk, two Moorish capitals, a town split by a gorge, a giant cave and a British territory.
Road distances below come from route planners and the official sites; tour details come from each tour's listing. Train times change, so check renfe.com before you rely on one.
The quick answer
For a first visit: the Caminito del Rey if you like walking, Granada if you want the Alhambra, Ronda for the views. Nerja and Frigiliana is the gentlest day, Gibraltar the longest. Córdoba is the quickest by train, at about 50 minutes.

What are the best day trips from Málaga?
The Caminito del Rey, Granada and the Alhambra, Ronda and Setenil, Nerja and Frigiliana, Gibraltar and Córdoba. The first three are the ones most visitors choose between.
The tour length is what the listing on this site states, door to door from central Málaga.
| Trip | Distance from Málaga | Travel time | Tour length | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Caminito del Rey | 57.7 km to the visitor centre | About 75 min by coach | 7 hours | Walkers and views |
| Granada and the Alhambra | About 130 km | About 1 h 30 min by car | 10 hours, non-refundable | The Alhambra |
| Ronda and Setenil | About 100 km to Ronda | About 1 h 45 min by car | 9 hours | Gorge views, white villages |
| Nerja and Frigiliana | About 55 km to Nerja | About 1 hour by car | 9 hours | An easy day, a cave, a swim |
| Gibraltar | About 133 km | About 1 h 30 min by car | About 11 hours | Something completely different |
| Córdoba | About 133 km by rail | About 50 min by fast train | 10 hours | The Mosque-Cathedral |
Is the Caminito del Rey worth it from Málaga?
Yes, if you are fine with heights and over 8. It is the one trip on this list that is a walk rather than a town, and the hardest to reach on your own.
The route runs about 7.7 km, one way, north to south through the Gaitanes gorge; the boardwalk itself is about 3 km of that. A helmet is compulsory. The official site sets the minimum age at 8 and asks visitors over 8 for an original ID to prove it. The path is closed on Mondays.
Without a car, a handful of trains a day run from Málaga to El Chorro, at the south end, and a shuttle bus takes you to the start in the north. It works, but the timings are tight. The guided tour solves that: the listing states two direct coach legs of about 75 minutes, a 3-hour guided walk, the entry ticket and an official guide, in groups split by language. Walking sticks and selfie sticks are not allowed, and closed shoes are required.

Direct coach from central Málaga, the entry ticket and an official guide on the path. Ages 8 and up.
Book this Tour detailsHow far is Málaga from Granada?
About 130 km by road, roughly an hour and a half by car. Alsa buses take from about 1 hour 30 minutes, and the tour listing allows about 2.5 hours for the coach out.
The hard part of a Granada day trip is the Alhambra ticket, not the drive. Tickets are nominative, you need a passport or national ID at the gate, and the Nasrid Palaces have a fixed, compulsory time slot. Good slots sell out weeks ahead. The only official seller is tickets.alhambra-patronato.es.
The Granada and Alhambra tour takes care of that, with the Nasrid Palaces and the Generalife included. The listing asks for full names and ID numbers at booking, and for the original passport or ID on the day: no photocopies. Names and dates cannot change, and the tour is non-refundable. Book it only when your dates are fixed.

The Alhambra with the Nasrid Palaces and the Generalife, a guide and tickets in your name. Non-refundable: book only once your dates are fixed.
Book this Tour detailsWhich is nicer, Granada or Málaga?
Granada has the greater monuments; Málaga is the better place to stay. Most visitors are happiest sleeping by the sea and giving Granada one long day, or a night.
Granada is inland and high up, and the climate shows it. On AEMET's averages, January nights at Granada airport fall to about 0 °C, against about 7 °C in Málaga, and July days reach about 35 °C, against about 31 °C on the coast.
What Granada has, Málaga can't match: the Alhambra, the Albaicín quarter facing it, and a bar culture where, in the words of Granada's tourist board, "in most places, a free tapa is served with each drink." What Málaga has: the sea, the beach, a working port and the easier base for every other trip on this page.
Is Ronda worth a day trip from Málaga?
Yes. Ronda sits on both sides of El Tajo gorge, joined by the Puente Nuevo, and the view from that bridge is the reason to go. Pair it with Setenil for a full day.
The Puente Nuevo took 34 years to build, from 1759 to 1793. Setenil de las Bodegas, often paired with Ronda, is across the line in Cádiz province: its houses and bars are built under rock overhangs along the river canyon, on streets such as Cuevas del Sol and Cuevas de la Sombra.
The Ronda and Setenil tour gives you about four hours in Ronda, self-paced or with a 2-hour guided walk depending on the option, then a little shuttle train into Setenil for about an hour. The listing does not accept children under 4. A wine and tapas stop is an option, not a given.

Ronda's gorge and the New Bridge, then the little train into Setenil, with the coach included.
Book thisAre Nerja and Frigiliana worth visiting?
Yes, and together they make the gentlest day trip from Málaga: a white village, a giant cave and a clifftop promenade, about an hour east along the coast.
Five young men from Maro and Nerja found the Nerja cave on 12 January 1959 while hunting bats, according to the Junta de Andalucía archive. Frigiliana, just inland, is the white village of the postcards: stepped lanes, flowerpots, views to the sea.
All three are hard to combine by bus in one day. The Nerja tour lists a guided visit to Frigiliana with free time, an 80-minute cave visit with an audio guide, a museum and VR room, then two hours of free time in Nerja by the Balcón de Europa. Pack swimwear if you want a dip.

Frigiliana, the Nerja cave with its audio guide and free time by the Balcón de Europa, coach included.
Book this Tour detailsIs Gibraltar worth a day trip from Málaga in 2026?
For something completely different, yes. Since 15 July 2026 routine checks at the land border have ended, which makes the day smoother. Carry a passport or an EU/EEA/Swiss national ID card.
The UK and the EU have applied their Gibraltar agreement provisionally since 15 July 2026, according to the UK government. Gibraltar has not joined the EU or Schengen: it applies Schengen-aligned entry rules, and customs limits on goods still apply. Spot checks remain possible, so keep your ID on you all day. The Gibraltar border post has the details.
The Gibraltar tour is mostly free time: about 5 to 6 hours on the Rock, with Rock attractions not included. The listing says the cable car is closed for renovation and not expected back before 2028, so plan on a Rock taxi tour or the walk up.
The coach both ways, a guide on the coach and five to six hours on the Rock to spend as you like.
Book thisWhat is nicer, Seville or Malaga?
Seville is the grander city; Málaga is easier to live in for a week. Seville is too big for a comfortable day trip, so give it a night if you can.
Seville is about 210 km by road. Direct trains from María Zambrano take about 2 hours at best, stopping at Córdoba. It is also far hotter: AEMET's average July high at Seville airport is 36 °C, against about 31 °C in Málaga, and it has no beach.
For a day by train, Córdoba is the better bet: the fastest trains take about 50 minutes. The Córdoba tour goes by coach and includes a guided visit to the Mosque-Cathedral with the entry ticket, a walk through the Jewish Quarter and free time for lunch. The listing asks you to arrive 15 minutes early, because the bus won't wait.

The Mezquita with a guide and the entry ticket, the Jewish Quarter and free time for lunch.
Book this Tour detailsFrequently asked questions
Which city is closest to Málaga?
Torremolinos, about 13 km west along the bay and on the C1 commuter train. Inland, Antequera is about 50 km away. Of the big historic cities, Granada is the closest, at about 130 km by road.
Can you do Granada and Ronda in one day?
Not sensibly. Granada lies north-east of Málaga and Ronda west, so you would spend most of the day on the road. Give each its own day.
Do you need a car for day trips from Málaga?
No. Trains reach Córdoba, Seville and El Chorro for the Caminito del Rey, and buses run to Granada and Nerja. Tours make sense for combinations that are awkward by public transport, such as Ronda with Setenil, or Nerja with Frigiliana and the cave.
Which day trip is best with children?
Nerja and Frigiliana is the gentlest. The Ronda tour accepts children from 4 according to its listing, and the Caminito del Rey only from 8, a rule the official site sets.
